AI provider unavailable

Understand skipped platforms, missing provider keys, partial probe results, and when to re-run.

Updated 2026-08-06

During probe, VisibleMax queries supported AI platforms for mention and answer-coverage evidence. Probing is key-gated: if a provider API key is missing or the provider errors, that platform skips gracefully. Other platforms and the core crawl/analyze report still complete.

What you might see

  • Some platforms show no probe responses while others complete
  • Scan or prompt-run status partial
  • Score and findings present, but platform comparison looks incomplete
  • Early-phase environments emphasizing DeepSeek + Gemini while other platforms stay ready for keys

Typical causes

  • Provider API key missing on the VisibleMax deployment — platform skipped by design
  • Provider outage or rate limit — transient soft-fail for that platform
  • Timeouts on slow provider responses — that platform may drop while others finish
  • Not a Free-plan issue — Free gates completed scan count and report depth; it does not invent fake probe rows for missing keys

What to do

  1. 1

    Use the report you have

Crawl, technical audit, and analyze findings remain actionable even when probes are incomplete.

  2. 2

    Check which platforms returned

Note blank vs filled platforms. Supported targets include OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), Perplexity, xAI (Grok), and DeepSeek when configured — see Supported AI providers.

  3. 3

    Re-run later for fuller coverage

If an outage was transient, a later Pro scan can refill probe evidence. Avoid rapid-fire retries.

  4. 4

Do not equate missing probes with “AI will never mention us”

Probes sample behavior; they are not a guarantee of mentions in customer chats. VisibleMax never promises placement.

Edge cases

  • Core competitor scans — may intentionally omit probe to control cost; missing platforms are by design.
  • All platforms blank — rare; could be widespread provider issues or probe soft-fail. Core report should still exist if analyze succeeded.
  • One platform always empty — often a configuration/key gap for that provider, not your site content.

When to contact support

  • Analyze completed but every expected platform stays empty across multiple days
  • Partial status never clears after known provider recovery
  • You need confirmation whether a platform is configured in your environment

FAQ

Can I supply my own OpenAI/Anthropic keys?

Customer-facing scans use VisibleMax-managed provider configuration. Missing keys on our side skip platforms gracefully; you do not paste keys into the product UI for probes.

Does a skipped platform lower my score unfairly?

Scores emphasize structural crawl/analyze signals. Treat incomplete probes as coverage gaps, not a verdict that your brand is invisible forever.

Is “provider unavailable” the same as “scan failed”?

No. Provider skips are soft. Hard failures are usually crawl/analyze reachability or timeout issues.
